Also known as “tisane”, herbal tea is a blanket term for all herbs, spices and flowers that are prepared and drank as a “tea” but are not from the Camellia Sinensis (orthodox tea) plant.

Herbs have been consumed as tea since mankind was created! Historical accounts show us that different cultures have incorporated herbal teas to their lives for centuries. The Chinese call it “liang cha”, which would translate as “cooling tea”, and herbal drinks also have a long history in India’s Ayurvedic tradition and in ancient Egypt, where hibiscus and chamomile tea were enjoyed. Herbal teas are a great caffeine-free option, with flavors for every mood and time of day.

Classics include Chamomile, Peppermint, Hibiscus, Lemon Balm, St. John’s Wort, and Tulsi.

Popular Herbal Teas

Here are a few favorites: Chamomile is a gentle, floral classic for the evening. Peppermint is cool and refreshing, a favorite after meals. Hibiscus brews a tart, ruby-red cup that is lovely iced. Fennel has a sweet, licorice-like taste. Raspberry leaf has a mild, earthy taste similar to black tea.

Brewing Guidelines

We suggest following the specific suggestions on your bag of herbal tea, but here are some guidelines.

1.5-2 tsp of loose tea for every 8oz of water. 210F/98C for 4-5 minutes, cover while steeping..
